2nd Grade Reading IEP Goal Bank Based On The Common Core Standards

Below are all of the 2nd grade reading standards and example goals written below them. Here is my advice on using my example goals: First, the common core standards are only used as just that, a standard. Whether or not they are appropriate for a typically developing student is up to you to determine. However, in order to great a goal, I needed some type of tiered skill to base it off of. Second, remember that a second grade skill might be used with a student who is older. Goals are skill based not age based. Third, some goals are short enough that they would not require an entire school year. You can use these as a stepping stone for a larger goal, or just make sure there are enough other goals that students have other things to work on. (I typically pick the latter). Last, feel free to grab my wording and rearrange, add other goals to it, or whatever else you need to be successful! Good luck!

2nd Grade Literature Standards

Key Ideas and Details:

Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.1

Goal 1: When given a skill level story, Student will be able to answer the question “Who are the characters in this story?” with 80% accuracy across 10 trials.

Goal 2: When given a story below a 500 lexile level, Student will be able to answer one of each who, what, where, why/how, questions. Student will master this when they have answered these questions across 3 consecutive trials with 90% accuracy.

Recount stories, including fables and folktales from diverse cultures, and determine their central message, lesson, or moral.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.2

Goal 1: Using a graphic organizer, determine the lesson of a grade level story with an average accuracy of 70% across 3 school year quarters.

Goal 2: Without prompts on 1st grade level story, Student will be able to find the central message of the story. Mastery of this goal will be when Student can identify the central message across 3 consecutive stories.

Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.3

Goal 1: Using a graphic organizer, Student will be able to write how the main character in a story responded on 4 out of 5 trials, with 80% accuracy.

Goal 2: Student will be able to identify if a main character reacted well or poorly on a skill level story, across 10 trials with 90% accuracy.

Craft and Structure:

Describe how words and phrases (e.g., regular beats, alliteration, rhymes, repeated lines) supply rhythm and meaning in a story, poem, or song.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.4

Goal 1: Student will be able to identify if a story or poem is rhyming across 10 trials with 90% accuracy.

Goal 2: Using a word bank, Student will be able to make a list of rhyming words with 70% accuracy on 4 out of 5 trials.

Describe the overall structure of a story, including describing how the beginning introduces the story and the ending concludes the action.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.5

Goal 1: Given a 2nd grade level story, Student will be able to determine what happened first and last. Student will demonstrate mastery when they can do this on 5 consecutive stories, with 80% accuracy.

Goal 2: Given a skill level story, Student will be able to write what happened first and last in a book with 80% accuracy, across 3 out of 6 trials.

Acknowledge differences in the points of view of characters, including by speaking in a different voice for each character when reading dialogue aloud.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.6

Goal 1: Student will be able to identify how two different characters in a book are feeling with 80% accuracy across 10 trials.

Goal 2: After reading a skill level book, Student will be able to determine if two characters are thinking differently with at least 60% accuracy on 5 consecutive trials.

Integration of Knowledge and Ideas:

Use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.7

Goal 1: Using a skill level text, Student will be able to describe 3 things that happened to a character in a story with 80% accuracy across 5 trials.

Goal 2: After reading a 2nd grade level text, Student will retell the story by what happened first, middle, and last. Student will master this skill when they can recall all 3 parts with an average 70% accuracy.

Compare and contrast two or more versions of the same story (e.g., Cinderella stories) by different authors or from different cultures.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.9

Goal 1: Using a Venn diagram, Student will be able to determine two differences and two similarities between the same story told by different authors. Student will show mastery when they can label all four across 5 trials.

Range of Reading and Text Complexity:

By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories and poetry, in the grades 2-3 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.10

Goal 1: Student will be able to read the Frye 2nd grade sight words list, with an average accuracy of 90%, across 10 trials with 10 words each.

Goal 2: After reading a second grade level story, Student will be able to read 72 words correct per minute, with 96% accuracy, across 3 consecutive trials.

Goal 3: After reading a skill level story, Student will be able score a composite score of 190 on the DIBELs Reading Test, across 5 trials with 80% accuracy.

2nd Grade Informational Text

Key Ideas and Details:

Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.1

Goal 1: Student will be able to answer 3 “what” questions about the main ideas of a 2nd grade level story with 70% accuracy across 10 trials.

Identify the main topic of a multi-paragraph text as well as the focus of specific paragraphs within the text.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.2

Goal 1: Student will be able to read a skill level informational text, and then determine what each paragraph has in common with 3 out of 4 trials having a 90% accuracy.

Goal 2: When given choices, student will be able to determine which main idea matches a given paragraph of an informational text. Student will show mastery by matching main ideas with 75% accuracy across 10 trials.

Describe the connection between a series of historical events, scientific ideas or concepts, or steps in technical procedures in a text.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.3

Goal 1: Student will to read a skill level list of procedures, and then be able to group similar directions together to form a correct list of directions. Student will show mastery when they can do this across 5 consecutive trials with 80% accuracy.

Goal 2: Student will be able to identify proper nouns within an informational text that tie together several events or concepts on 10 trials, across 3 school quarters, with an average accuracy rate of 80%.

Craft and Structure:

Determine the meaning of words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 2 topic or subject area.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.4

Goal 1: Student will be able to identify and verbally recite the meaning of 10 new vocabulary words each quarter that are relevant to grade level content. Student will show mastery when they can say the definition of 40 new words by the end of the 4th school quarter with 70% accuracy.

Goal 2: Student will be able to learn and match the correct definitions to 3 new words learned each science unit. This goal will be mastered when Student can match all new words by the end of the year with 80% accuracy.

Know and use various text features (e.g., captions, bold print, subheadings, glossaries, indexes, electronic menus, icons) to locate key facts or information in a text efficiently.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.5

Goal 1: Student will be able to identify and describe how the text features: bold print, titles, subheadings, and captions, help the reader with 80% accuracy across 3 consecutive trials.

Goal 2: Student will be able to use a text’s glossary to look up the meaning of a word with 90% accuracy, across 3 trials, in 3 different settings.

Identify the main purpose of a text, including what the author wants to answer, explain, or describe.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.6

Goal 1: Student will be able to determine what a grade level informational text is explaining with 90% accuracy across 10 trials.

Integration of Knowledge and Ideas:

Explain how specific images (e.g., a diagram showing how a machine works) contribute to and clarify a text.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.7

Goal 1: Student will be able to describe what information is being presented on a basic info graphic on 4 out of 5 trials having an 80% accuracy rate.

Goal 2: Student will be able to match a picture in an informational text with a corresponding detail with an average accuracy rate of 70% across 5 trials.

Describe how reasons support specific points the author makes in a text.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.8

Goal 1-A: Student will be able to identify claims an author makes in a short informational 2nd grade level text with 80% accuracy across 3 consecutive trials.

Goal 1-B: Student will be able to circle or underline what details help to create the claim made by the author with 70% accuracy across 3 consecutive trials.

Compare and contrast the most important points presented by two texts on the same topic.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.9

Goal 1: Using a graphic organizer, Student will be able to identify 2 differences between two texts on the same topic with 80% accuracy across 4 out of 5 trials.

Range of Reading and Level of Text Complexity:

By the end of year, read and comprehend informational texts, including history/social studies, science, and technical texts, in the grades 2-3 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range.

Goal 1: Student will be able to answer 3 “what” comprehension questions about 2nd grade level informational texts with an average 80% accuracy across 6 trials.

2nd Grade Foundational Skills

Phonics and Word Recognition

Distinguish long and short vowels when reading regularly spelled one-syllable words.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.2.3.A

Goal 1: When given a list of 10 mixed one syllable long and short vowel words, student will be able to read words with 70% accuracy across 4 out of 5 trials.

Know spelling-sound correspondences for additional common vowel teams.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.2.3.B

Goal 1: Student will be able to fluently read words with the vowel team “ea” within a story with an average accuracy of 90% across 3 consecutive trials.

Decode regularly spelled two-syllable words with long vowels.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.2.3.C

Goal 1: When given a list of 3, 2 syllable long vowel “a” words, Student will be able to read them with with 100% accuracy across 7 out of 10 trials.

Decode words with common prefixes and suffixes.
